Government-backed home improvements
Government-backed schemes can help improve privately rented homes that are expensive to heat or have poor energy efficiency. Depending on your household and the property, funding may be available towards improvements to your home.
Eligibility can depend on your household income, whether someone in your household receives certain benefits, where you live and the energy efficiency of the property.
Household income of £36,000 or less? That's one of the main eligibility routes. Households with a higher income may still qualify through certain benefits or eligible postcode areas.

Your landlord will need to be involved before work can be carried out on the property. You don't need to arrange everything with them before starting your enquiry though. We'll ask for your landlord or letting agent's details when you continue so the next steps can be worked out.
Not necessarily. There can be different routes to support depending on things such as your household income, benefits, where you live and the energy efficiency of the property. If you're not sure, complete the quick check and tell us what you know.
Depending on the property and the support available, improvements could include insulation, heating upgrades, smart heating controls, heat pumps or solar panels. What is appropriate for your home will depend on the property and any further assessment that is required.
No. The checker is an initial indication only. Any support will depend on your household, the property, your location, available funding and the requirements of the relevant scheme or provider. Where there may be a suitable route, the next step is to establish what support may actually be available for your home.

To complete your application, you'll need to provide your landlord's contact details at a later stage. This allows us to explain proposed improvements, discuss funding and obtain their authorisation.
